My Novel Has A Publisher!

As those of you who are my Facebook friends already know, today I signed a contract to have my novel published by Cedar Fort Inc, a regional publisher based in Springville, Utah.

Wooo Hoooo!

And now the real work begins.

They actually made their offer based on the submission I sent in last September, yet I've spent the last three months or so revising and rewriting. The updated story is much stronger. It's also much longer - by about 40 pages, which is how many pages Cedar Fort wants me to cut.

So I've been working on going through and trimming out a bunch of stuff. Not fun. But I have a few ideas how to make it work.

Another thing they asked for is a new title. I guess The Flight of Na Pua Lei doesn't work for them. I've come up with a handful to give them, but I could really use your help - hence on my writing blog, the contest for this month is the title game. So far I have one suggestion - left as a comment on my Facebook blog simulcast. Now's your chance to score some chocolate - contest open through this Friday.

um . . . so i'm lacking a bit with the written word. i AM good at buying your book, attending any book signings, and basically being a groupie!

Congratulations Don! I'm looking forward to reading what finally gets into print. I really enjoyed the story the first time I read it, and I imagine it has only gotten better!
Here is my title suggestion: "Life After the Best Two Years, Hawaiian Style".

Canoe-Paddling Polynesian Guys

We have finally hung a picture on the wall here in our house. The fact that this is a blog-worthy event eighteen months after moving in is, I admit, rather pathetic. But it is also very exciting. I finally feel like we are really moving in. Slowly but surely we're picking away at the projects that need to be done, and (for now) avoiding the temptation to take on any new ones. This picture is called Hoe Kama Kani , which means "paddle with the wind." We found this picture at a home show in Honolulu while we were students, and I just fell in love with it. I stood there and stared at the picture for quite some time, but I simply couldn't justify the $140 price. The salesman told us that they had a smaller print available for much less, but they had sold out at the show. We could look at it if we came by the studio the next week. For several years, I was the Utah Wing Leader for Angel Flight West, a charity flying organization that donates flights in private aircraft for people who need medical attention. Each October, the Wing Leaders would get together with the board of directors in Long Beach, California, for a Wing Leader Planning Day. The first year I attended, actor and pilot Michael Dorn was on the board. I didn't recognize him at first, but as soon as he spoke, there was no doubt who he was.
